Chapter 19
Things are never quite what I expect. Iâve been present in Lelaniâs apartment for less than ten minutes and already Iâm heading back out on my own.
âI thought the whole idea was being a team,â I say, pulling my hair up and tucking it under a black skull cap as the elevator whooshes downward.
âPrecisely. Weâre going to divide and conquer today. Itâs the benefit of having two of us.â
I eye Lelani as the doors open. Everything about my gut says that sheâs being honest about our plans for tonight. Our plan is to follow both ex-cons and watchâor interrogateâfor any information about Pookie-Steve. Apparently while Iâve been gallivanting in and out of secret lairs and designing outfits, Lelani has been doing the real work and canvassing and watching the warehouse district every night. She says that they usually have a team meeting on Thursday nights, where new product is distributed and orders for the week are given. Weâre going to see who attends.
We part ways at the main doors, she taking the door to the garage and me exiting out front. Good thing she didnât ask if my car was fixed, because Iâm pretty sure sheâs not going to be happy that I have to call Lawrence to come pick me up. I donât necessarily want to out that I have syndicated our crime fighting team yet.
I climb into Lâs Challenger moments later, surprised at the chill in the air. I should have brought more black layers. Good thing we plan on doing most of our work from inside the car. Also a good thing Lawrence is sipping water and seems totally sober now.
âDidnât think weâd be seeing you so soon, did you get fired again?â
âHar har, L,â I answer as I squeeze into the back seat and belt up. âWait, is this Christmas music?â
Lâs eyes flick to mine in the rearview mirror. âYeah?â
I do the mental calculations. âBut isnât Christmas a month away?â Then my brain catches up. âCrap, that means Thanksgiving is next week?â Time just flies by when youâre having a wretched time, it seems.
L and Whalon exchange glances. âWhere are we headed? Your place?â
âNo, Operation Double-cross my boss and the Golden Arrowââ I pause, âthatâs a mouthful. We should pick a name. Like the government does.â
âPetunia?â Whalon offers.
âNo, definitely not. Project Hoodwink? No wait. Dragnet,â L responds.
I clap. âYes perfect, project Dragnet goes into effect tonight. Ironically, weâre headed back to Yuletide Court. And while weâre driving, can you turn down that racket?â
I see Whalonâs manicured brows rise. âRacket?â
âThe jingle stuff.â
âI told you sheâs a grinch. The only thing she likes about Christmas isââ
ââartichoke dip,â I finish his sentence with a nod. âDamn skippy. Just call me Kazran Sardick.â
âWill that present a problem?â Whalon asks L, and I get some weird scary premonition.
âWait you two arenât planning some sort of corny Christmas wedding, are you? Because if I have to dress like an elf, I assure youââ
L laughs nervously, âMG calm down. Thatâs . . .
